A LETTER TO THE BELIEVER

Dear Theophilus:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

My mission to all is to preach the Gospel, to teach believers the meaning of walking in the Spirit and the utter importance of this walk in fulfilling the Great Commission of our Lord and Savior. I believe God has called me to this specific service to the churches for the follow reasons: to teach and define the wondrous workings of the salvation all believers have entered into; to demonstrate to believers the single importance of becoming individual soul winners; and to give the believer a Scriptural basis by which they can be energize by God to fulfill the only calling that the Body of Christ is commissioned by Jesus to occupy ourselves with during our sojourn in this cosmos.

For years now I have been distressed by the lack of desire in individual believers to engage in personal evangelism. Instead, they are comfortable with merely occupying themselves with all kinds of “ministries” such as setup, hospitality, singles, children, prison, etc., ad nauseam. I have no problem with any believer engaging in the various good works that the churches are putting so much emphasis on as long as these efforts: begin with the preaching of the Gospel; stress discipling as the underlying purpose of those being ministered to; and insuring that those who are ministered to are themselves being prepared to preach the Gospel and disciple those who rightly respond to God’s grace. This current situation in the churches calls to mind what Christ had to say: “To the angel of the church in Ephesus write:…“I know your deeds and your toil and perseverance, and that you cannot tolerate evil men, and you put to the test those who call themselves apostles, and they are not, and you found them to be false; and you have perseverance and have endured for My name’s sake, and have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have left your first love.’” With regard to this please be assured that while I’m being frank with you, my message is neither harsh nor accusatory. With all my heart I love the Body of Christ and I will do nothing to hurt my brothers and sisters in Christ or, in other words, “I would not have sorrow from those who ought to make me rejoice.”

However, it saddens me that “got Jesus” or some other superficial cliché is the extent of most believers message to the unredeemed. Due to their own lack of interest they remain unprepared and not Spirit-energized “to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you.” With very little effort any Jehovah’s Witness, Mormon, Muslim or other devout adherent of false religious ideas can talk the average Christian into a box. I believe this circumstance exists because many Christians are giving heed to false teachings: “wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires.” The false teachers, “whose god is their [own] appetite…glory is in their [own] shame…set their [own] minds on earthly things,” are only to glad to fill other minds “with worldly and empty chatter;” lead the weak believer and unbeliever alike “to further ungodliness;” and as Paul prophesized this “will spread like gangrene.” This is clearly the case in the “me-ism” so prevalent in today’s so called Christian music and the teaching of Olsten; the social gospel of Warren; it is grossly demonstrated in the “greed, which is idolatry” that is ubiquitous to the message of the “prosperity movement;” boldly sought after in the false mysticism of the emerging church; and heard in the clamor of right-wing conservatives—this movement claims to be a godly continuation of America’s “Judeo/Christian heritage” (whatever that is). In doing so they seek to lump together Mormons, Catholics, orthodox Jews and so-called evangelical Christians as peoples of common shared beliefs. But I share no beliefs, neither common nor uncommon, with Mormons, Catholics, orthodox Jews and many so-called evangelical Christians.

For these reasons, “I long to see you so that I may impart some spiritual gift to you, that you may be established; that is, that I may be encouraged together…each of us by the other’s faith, both yours and mine.” The message that God has called me to declare is neither new, it is, however, “foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God;” nor is it well heeled, flashy or stacked with condescending and “persuasive words of wisdom,” it is a “demonstration of the Spirit and of power;” “the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.”

Sincerely,
